What a surprising and welcome addition to the Walled City's dining options this is! Located in what can be somewhat gloomy circumstances in the depths of the Rows, Moules a Go-Go have created a fresh and modern restaurant in white, yellow, indigo and pine. At row level the tables are arrayed around a central bar while upstairs there are more tables and a comfortable drinking zone.
Indeed the whole concept of the place is fresh. Why would anyone open a restaurant specialising in mussels and who but those who have already enjoyed the splendid cuisine of Antwerp and Bruges would want to spend an evening going out for 'a Belgian'? Yet, they have and we thank them for it.
The menu is simple and laid out in a logical style: a page of starters, two pages of main courses divided between mussels steamed and mussels steamed and grilled, meat from a rotisserie and steaks and a page of desserts. Each of the main course offerings is served in a variety of dressings. There is a selection of speciality Belgian beers including fruit flavoured gueuzes as well as more conventional tipples.
A platter of three dozen mussels in a garlic, olive oil and cheese dressing was splendid and came with chips (frozen and not quite up to the standard of Belgian fritten but still very acceptable) with mayonnaise. Gammon from the rotisserie was plentiful and succulent and served in a raspberry jus.
The service was charming. We'll be back.
