We visited on a Friday lunchtime. There was a steady stream of people in and out, some eating but most drinking. This was the first week for which the bar was serving food, so the menu was still very much being tried out. We arrived just after midday and sat in the front bar. There is usually a log fire going at this time of year but on this occasion there was no fire going in either of the front rooms. We did comment on this and a member of the management came and told us the heating was on, but that they were having problems with the fires due to damp wood. We moved into the back bar next to a big radiator, where it was much warmer. There were no menus on the tables but when we asked we were presented with a paper copy which changes weekly.
There was a choice of about five starters, which ranged between £3.90 and £5.00. For mains there were again around five options which ranged between £8.00 and £13.50, and desserts were around £5.00. Cheese was £7.00 but was big enough for two to share quite comfortably. There was also a good selection of lighter bites on offer. We were told that there would soon be a daily specials board as well as grill options, but as this was the first week for food, they were just testing things out.
We opted for the slow roast belly pork with red cabbage on crushed potatoes, and the chargrilled calf’s liver, pancetta and onion gravy served with creamy mash. Both dishes were cooked to perfection, and presented very nicely. The liver was moist in the middle, but also had a lovely caramelised crust on the outside. The belly pork had lovely crisp crackling, whilst still being moist and succulent, and the mash was outstanding.
When we ordered these, we were asked if we wanted to order additional chips or vegetables, as there was not a huge amount which accompanied these dishes, but in fact the serving was quite big enough. There were carrots and green beans and an additional jug of gravy for the pork.
We decided to share a cheese board as neither of us have a sweet tooth, so I cannot comment on the desserts, but the cheese board was very good. It contained four varieties including a very nice Stilton and a good English brie, there were also plenty of grapes, celery and a very nice chutney - easily enough for two people to share.
All in all we were impressed with the quality of the food and the service. We shall soon be going back to test out the wider menu as it evolves.
